Delta-8 THCV vs Delta-9: What’s the Difference?
Delta-8 THCV vs Delta-9: What’s the Difference?
If you closely follow the weed industry (or even if you don’t), you’ve surely heard about THCV: that “new” cannabinoid with appetite suppression qualities. Although THCV is not actually a “new” compound, it is exceptionally rare, unlike its more common cousins THC and CBD.
As consumers learn more about the “sports car of cannabinoids,” demand for THCV is on the rise. A quick google search for “THCV products” yields what appears to be a plethora of options in many states (especially non-legalized ones), from THCV edibles to THCV tinctures and beverages.
But BUYERS BEWARE!
Almost ALL of these products are not true (Delta-9) THCV. Though they’re often marketed as containing high amounts of THCV, they contain little to no real THCV.
Rather, they contain a lab-created synthetic cannabinoid called Delta-8 THCV (Δ8 THCV). This knockoff cannabinoid won’t curb your munchies or offer the same therapeutic effects Delta-9 does.
Delta-8 doesn’t truly exist in the natural world. Though it is derived from CBD (hemp), it gets most of its bulk from added chemicals. Since this practice isn’t regulated, some of the chemicals used to create the synthetic cannabinoids may be unsafe.
Delta-8 THCV is chemically manufactured in a laboratory from other plant matter like orange peels.
Yes, orange peels!
Due to a lack of meaningful regulation in the hemp industry, these modern oil purveyors are able to claim their products contain THCV without disclosing they actually contain Delta-8 THCV (or in some cases, nothing at all).
So how can consumers in other states determine if a product actually contains Delta-9 THCV?
Short answer: they can’t.
At least not without taking it to a certified lab that can accurately analyze the cannabinoid content. But who would go through all the trouble and expense of lab-testing these phony products to determine what’s actually in them?
Spoiler alert: we would!! 😉 stay tuned!
